  1. a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship. – “a great literary masterpiece”
  2. Julie C. Dao’s Rise of the Empress series
I was in a reading slump for a looong time. I was actually kinda scared before I started reading this because what if I don’t finish it in schedule? What if I don’t get the hang of it? But knowing Julie Dao, she never fails to amaze me!

A little recap..

I don’t read that much historical stuff but by stumbling through Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, I can’t believe how much I’ve been missing on this kind of stuff! (Read my review here.)

The first book made me fall in love with anti-heroine MCs and Xifeng was already my favorite. I was really looking forward to reading more of her in the 2nd book because it left me hanging when it ended.

You should read this one because..

Julie Dao’s Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix is the best sequel everyone had been asking for! And I love how Julie never fails to yield an amazing story. While the first book was a bit twisted and had an anti-heroine MC, this one is the complete opposite. It’s really enchanting and Jade is so pure.

I had this “light” feeling the entire time I was reading it and I swear I felt like I was in a whole new world. Everything felt real and it will definitely give you the chills. One of Julie Dao’s greatest talents is being able to put these wonderful scenes into words. Every book would take you to a whole new world.

Major plus is its uniqueness. I’ve never read something like this and I’m sure you haven’t either. It’s a fantasy retelling without the usual witches, fairies and beasts. It features different elements and supernatural creatures that you’d surely enjoy reading about. It also features a few dark scenes but that’s one of the reasons why it’s wickedly satisfying to read.

Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix will make you want to explore the Asian culture. I’m from an asian country and still in awe whenever I hear tales from the Southeast Asia. Another one of the reasons why you should read the book and GRAB A COPY! Julie’s words are magical. It creates these awesome images in your mind.

I wasn’t ready for the roller coaster of emotions that hit me while I was in the middle of reading the book. I devoured the words and there’s this proud feeling whenever I finish a chapter. I think I’ve mumbled, “WHOA” a lot of times. (Okay, I’m trying really hard to keep my mouth shut to avoid spoilers because I really want you guys to enjoy this book like I did!)

I’ve mentioned that this was quite different from the first one but this book still have those catchy scenes that will make you to not want to stop reading. It’s clear that Julie Dao’s writing had improved and is now in a whole new level! It will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat!

Another remarkable thing about this amazing author is creating the perfect characters. They work well when put together. Everyone has this remarkable trait like Jade’s pureness, Wren being the tough one and Xifeng’s bitchiness (which is really my fave!)

To wrap it up, I’ve never been this proud of a book, a series and an author. This is my best read of the year! I’ve been looking forward to Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix ever since I got to finish Forest of a Thousand Lanterns. Julie Dao is officially one of my fave authors! She made me want to read a lot of books set in Asia and I look forward to reading more of her work!

Overall, I rate Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix, 5 out of 5 stars! I get the feeling that 5 isn’t really enough for this is a truly wonderful read! I was staring at a wall for a few minutes after I finished reading. It ended beautifully but I wanted more! It also gives you this sense of pride to be able to witness Jade’s ascension to a wonderful woman. Every literary element made this a really nice read!  No regrets! I’m really glad I stumbled through this book last year and was able to participate in the tour!
